Painted with virtuosity and elegance, this colorful still-life represents the best side of Eerik Haamer’s (1908-1994) art. Here, the Palladian demonstrates his supple brushwork, his ability to conjure up a masterpiece from an unpretentious motif, which is on the one hand a lesson in colorism, and on the other hand a characteristic example of the compositional vision of the Impressionist still-life – the objects are only partially painted on the canvas, the picture continuing as if outside the frame.
Bright sunlight from the window floods the entire picture while a balancing reddish accent is formed by a triangle of apples, flower petals, and paint spread across the palette; one could say that Cezanne meets Bonnard here.
