While studying in Dresden as a Pallas scholarship holder in 1922-23, Eduard Wiiralt (1898-1954) also painted scenes from brothels. It is unlikely that he visited them himself as he probably lacked the money for this, no matter how cheap the entertainment was in the inflationary Weimar Republic.

In his engravings, he used nude sketches made after models at the Dresden Academy. It was the time of expressionism and this was reflected in the nudes of the academy. The woman with blackened eyes seems to enjoy her physical charms and knows how to show them to others.

The print is reproduced in Mai Levin’s 1998 monograph “Eduard Wiiralt 1898-1954”.
