In early 1937, Eduard Wiiralt (1898-1954) had a solo exhibition at the Helsinki Art Gallery, featuring works from his first 20 years of work. “The birth of woodcut” was chosen as the first work in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, and was an ideal introduction to his profession and style.

The exhibition itself became a major event in local cultural life, as the opening was attended by Finland’s then Prime Minister, Minister of Education, and Minister of Justice, not to mention numerous other important cultural and political figures. The work itself became a kind of textbook example of graphic art, which art teachers still often use to explain the nature and birth of graphic art.

The work has been reproduced in many books and is also part of the permanent collections of various art museums.
