Eduard Kutsar’s (1902-1970) studies at Pallas lasted an unusually long time, mainly due to financial difficulties. The positive side of this was that over the years he was able to study under a wide variety of teachers and acquired knowledge and skills in painting, graphic arts as well as sculpture. Thus, he developed into a vibrant, multi-layered and dynamic artist.
Artist Mauri Gross sees the layers of different eras and philosophical charge in “Homegrown lilacs”, saying: “This is a painting that needs to be peeled back layer by layer. It seems as if the piece, which has been waiting for its time on the wall of a farmhouse for years, has reached a new era. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the table with the closed book is not in the room at all but rather, we see a summer sky in the background. Looking at the horizon and contemplating the era, freedom and ignorance are simultaneously available. Free air and the aroma of lilacs versus the symbolic closed book are the tension and axis of the work as a whole.”
