Edgar Valter’s (1929-2006) rise as a surrealist and imaginative painter was largely realized posthumously. During his lifetime, he was known primarily as a book illustrator, and his free-form work remained largely confined to his own walls, with its finest pieces still waiting to be discovered.

“Magician” is stylistically typical of the work of the 1960s and 1970s. It has a fair amount of vibrancy, freshness and elegance, and at the same time an old-style masterly note resulting from the dark brown. The event taking place in a mysteriously dim room describes the communication between two characters, with the trick itself already completed as we can read from the girl’s face expressing surprise.
