The intertwining of surrealism and the experience of nature is one of the main themes of Edgar Valter’s (1929-2006) work. The transformation of reality into vision takes place right before the viewer’s eyes and draws the audience like a magnet deep into the interior of the picture space. Such transformation, the creation of a believable mystical world, characterized Valter’s works throughout his creative path.

In a work about the creation of the world, Valter interprets the mythological Mother Earth in a figurative sense as a woman of fertile age, from whose womb birches grow and fertile soil is born. The resulting curved natural form thus has the effect of not a single hillside, but an arc of the soon-to-be-born globe itself. And he also brings the rest of the pictorial space to life – in the sunset sky, new paths, new worlds and new stories are born… Valter at his very best.
