Concordia Klar (1938-2004), one of the numerous powerful Estonian female graphic artists, dedicated several prints to the romantic interpretation of Tallinn’s Old Town, creating some of the most poetic symbolizations of the city ever made. “Tallinn Town Hall” is an often reproduced work, depicting the iconic building – the only Gothic town hall in the Nordic countries – from multiple angles, using a soft varnish technique that allows for blurred transitions.
Within the image, we see both the representative building itself as well as fragments of artworks hidden in the interior of the house, intertwined into one by a beautiful female figure. Fantastical realism and documentary hand-in-hand are intended to trigger in the viewer both the joy of recognition and nostalgia for the glorious past of a city, symbolized by the unique silhouette of the Old Town.
