Boris Ninemäe (1925–1991), who had to flee to Sweden as a young boy, developed as an artist in his new homeland but memories of his native Hiiumaa coast took him back to the sea there again and again. The artist’s realistic painting style is always recognizable, depicting everyday activities.

A certain generality allows Ninemäe’s scenes to be placed in any place, and so it is here – the city, wrapped in impressionistic mist, can represent a port anywhere in the world. The main thing is the action and the atmosphere itself: a fisherman walking towards a ship in a quiet harbor with nets on his back. The weather is calm and the water is flat, as if emphasizing the timeless, eternal nature of the activity.
