August Pulst (1889-1977) moved to Merivälja, to Kesktee street with his family in 1943. He had depicted this picturesque garden city in his work before but after moving there, the corresponding motifs became more frequent in both his oil and watercolor paintings. He was inspired by both winter views of gardens buried in snow as well as forests near residential buildings. As a keen gardener himself, he grew fruit trees and berry bushes in his own yard and established a rock garden in it, too.
Both the sea and the forest were located at equal distances from the Merivälja home. This work, in light blue tones, depicts the latter, suggestively conveying the purity and crispness of the snow, the enchanting peace of a snow-covered row of trees. As an exciting accent, tree trunks in warm brown colors peek out from between the soft white.
The work is reproduced in Mai Levin’s book “August Pulst as an Artist” (Tallinn, 2025, p. 195).
