August Pulst (1889-1977) was an artist whose roots go back to Pärnu County, where he spent his childhood and youth. From there, it was a natural path to the Riga City Art School, where Pulst studied under some of the most renowned painters in Latvia.

In 1915, the young man had just returned from Riga and moved to Tallinn, where he started working as a decorator at the Estonia Theatre. This colorful landscape with a pink cloud may therefore have been inspired by both his new home region, Harju County, and the lush meadows of Pärnu County. The exact location does not play a role here, as the main focus is on the artist’s admirable ability to operate with tones energized by the light of a warm summer evening and to convey the creative passion bubbling in the heart of the young Pulst.

The work is reproduced in Mai Levin’s monograph “August Pulst as an Artist” (2025, p. 50).
