August Pulst (1889-1977) was, in addition to his work as an artist, a true preserver of folk heritage and one of the founders of the Estonian Museum in Tallinn, the predecessor of today’s Art Museum of Estonia. In the year this piece was completed, he was removed from the list of the Artists’ Union by the authorities because his painting style did not meet the strict requirements of socialist realism.

For the time, this piece really does seem like that of a Western Fauvist! Fortunately, Pulst did not care about this at all and continued to paint, and in addition, he was actively involved in gardening, the products of which he enjoyed depicting. It’s very likely that in this painting, which presents a late summer aroma and rich, ripe tones, we see flowers and fruits from his own garden. The cheerful overall impression of the painting goes hand in hand with the artist’s own character, and the beautifully shaped ceramic vase hints at the artist’s passion for historical objects.
