“Painting is made pure by the artist’s energy. If the energy is pure and positive, it will definitely be transmitted to the audience. This energy will remain relevant as long as it remains in the painting. It’s great when the energy received from the painting creates a good mood, laughter, tears of joy or other positive reactions,” has said August Künnapu (“August Künnapu”, 2007. Pk. 44). “Women with Balls”, which belongs to his early creative period, is inspired by just such a summery, free and happy energy.

Painter Mall Nukke writes: “The charm of August Künnapu’s work lies in his discovery of everyday subjects, transforming them into a picturesquely charming play of colors. The women are like vibrant splashes of color, in action with a summer ball game. Beautiful and aloof. Strong, emancipated women who know what is important to them. The women with the balls seem like a group of sun-worshipping goddesses. Lovers of summer pleasures. Priestesses dedicated to beauty.”

Künnapu’s works are part of art museum collections as well as private collections all over Estonia, Latvia, Germany and Denmark.
