The life of August Albo (1893-1963) and the return of his works to his homeland have been one of the most intriguing events in Estonian art in recent times. Albo is now becoming almost synonymous with unique ballet scenes and masterfully painted large-format landscapes.

“Landscape with an arched bridge” was painted in the 1950s, a time when Albo was at the peak of his career. Although the artist had settled in the USA at that time, European influences are clearly visible in his work. Thus, we come to the feeling that we find in the painting a perfect combination of the idyllic natural experiences he experienced during his travels.

Albo had a great knack for bringing a sense of familiarity and homeliness to his landscapes. In this painting, this message is conveyed by a family of ducks landing on the water, which symbolically belong to waterscapes on every continent.
