“The scarlet sails of the sunrise,
navy blue fabric
from the middle sky to the beach sand.
And on the sand above the rose hips
the gold dust of the first bee’s flight.”
Excerpt from Jaan Kross’ poem “The Twenty-Threes”
Arville Puström-Uus (1921-2014), originally from Tallinn, grew up on the seashore, in Merivälja. Although she was one of those exiled artists whose eyes never saw Estonia again after 1944, the views here would forever resonate in her work. In “Early Morning in a Coastal Village”, we notice the influences of the fine brushwork of the artist’s Pallas teacher Juhan Nõmmik but in the color range the warmth characteristic of Puström-Uus herself.
A romantically nostalgic undertone ran through the artist’s entire portfolio, sometimes suggested by children playing in the yard or a bustling housewife, sometimes by the threshing floors so characteristic of Estonia, but in this painting, in the foreground, a painted sail for boats waiting to go to sea.
