Arnold Kalmus (1882-1942) from Paide has a relatively long educational path. It began in 1906 in the studio of Jakov Goldblatt in St. Petersburg, then at the School of the Society for the Promotion of Arts, and from 1917-20 at the Academy of Arts. Among other things, his later teacher was Vassili Šuhhajev who was a strong draftsman and under whom Adamson-Eric and Aleksander Vardi also studied. Šuhhajev’s powerful modeling infected him, and portraits representing a style similar to Kalmus’ have been exhibited at the Art Museum of Estonia in the exhibition of modernism and art deco.

This lovely landscape with a beautifully shaped rotunda is Kalmus’ earliest known painting and is very important in terms of his creative biography. The charming handling of light, both in the landscape and on the water, is, in addition to the excellent choice of shots, the strongest aspect of this piece.
