Arno Vihalemm (1911-1990), a Pallas graduate, worked as a painter, graphic artist and poet. As a native of Pärnu, he was always fond of coastal views, which found expression both through his brush and the written word. Among other things, his poems were among the first to be quietly republished here by Estonian exiles.

The 1946 view of a sandy beach entitled “Coast with boats” demonstrates Vihalemm as a great neo-impressionist painter. The unpretentious motif is captured in a fresh and airy manner, the composition is classically “in place” and the impression of a bright summer day is vividly conveyed.
