Ardo Sivadi (1900-1966) was from Narva, which had its own art scene and museums: the Peetri House and the Lavretsov Museum. This environment encouraged young people there to delve deeper into art and this path was chosen by several young people from Narva who went to study in St. Petersburg: Eduard Verber, August Jansen, Peet Aren, etc.
In 1922, Sivadi entered Pallas, which Vabbe graduated from as a student in 1932, and then worked as an art teacher in Narva, Rakvere and Tallinn. However, in the 1930s, he settled permanently in Tallinn. While in the 1920s, Sivadi was slightly affected by the angularity of Cubism, after that he turned to the neo-objective style.
In the late 1950s and 1960s, however, he was captivated by a style that geometrized, emphasized the generalization of forms, and large, clear areas of color. “The rooftops of Tallinn” represents this period in the artist’s creative path. Colorful, with some green trees contrasting with the red roofs. Thanks to the color scheme and the treatment of light, the piece has a bright and captivating effect.
