The female nude occupies a central place in the work of Anton Starkopf (1889-1966), one of the main representatives of Estonian art deco sculpture. Starkopf, who studied in St. Petersburg, Munich and Paris before World War I, was particularly influenced by the latter two cities.

By bringing out the shine of the glaze and the reflective effect of this material well, the sculptor creates a work in which, in addition to the definite form, the lively modeling of the poser immediately catches the eye. The approach to form, which dates back to the 1930s, echoes the archaic generalizing nature that we often see in monuments.
