“I seek visual experiences in both life and art,” said Andres Tolts (1949-2014), a legendary master of Estonian pop art. “In my work, I try to move on the boundary line where nature and human creation, reality and abstraction, meet – where they merge into a whole. I want to know whether the banal is banal or is it just a matter of context. /…/ I can’t help but hate chaos, in life and in art. This also explains why I value the clarity and concreteness of a visual idea” (Catalogue of the Andres Tolts retrospective exhibition. Tallinn, 1999, p. 23).

Order and clarity of thought are also obvious in his work “Small landscapes B V”, where Tolts creates a composition with multiple viewpoints in a painting placed on a long, narrow format. The sea view contrasts with the parts of the picture resembling marbling, which are separated by a geometric frame motif. The rational and romantic are balanced in this work but the decorative qualities and interesting color scheme come to the fore in the painting.
