The picture within a picture was an important compositional style in the work of Andres Tolts (1949-2014), often allowing him to combine a realistic motif with a more abstract theme. The ambiguous pictorial language expresses an absurd situation through surrealism, but the nature motif expresses something real, something actually seen somewhere. The visual image space surrounding it is filled with Tolts’ characteristic constructive, patterned geometric shapes, reminiscent of marbling. Anyone who wants to can also identify Malevich’s black square as a detail of the construction.
