In 1925–29, Andrei Jegorov (1878-1954) often visited Saaremaa. From that time on, we can find both views of Kuressaare and paintings from the Panga Cliff in Mustjala. This picturesque coastal cliff in the Northern part of Saaremaa is over 20 meters high and three kilometers wide, and is under natural protection, so it is not surprising that it inspired Jegorov with its dramatic beauty rising from the sea.
The paintings he created there are all painted with the artist’s characteristic mastery; one only has to look at the play of light on the sea. “Saaremaa Coast (Mustjala Cliff)” is a characteristic example of Jegorov’s naturalistic style. The dazzling iridescence of the sun on the water and the high coast in the shade, together with the silhouettes of sailboats in the depths of the painting and the low white clouds in the light blue sky, create a romantic mood and a feeling of summer.
Jegorov has painted the same motif with small variations later on as well, which shows that the location of painting was important and often inspiring to the artist. Incidentally, Mustjala Cliff as one of the artists’ favorite places, has been declared a protected art monument, too.
