Andrei Jegorov has painted this early winter motif of women washing clothes by the river many times. Against the background of the dark-water river, the women’s red skirts act as a cheerful note in this otherwise melancholic time of year – it was precisely these small, vibrant spots of color that Jegorov loved to use in other works as well.

When depicting winter views, the gouache-tempera technique was one of his favorites. Its lightness helped him convey the prevailing crisp atmosphere. In addition to the five women actively engaged in their work, other riverside details in the painting also deserve attention. The boats waiting in the water tell the story of the life of the local male family – after all, they were the ones who mostly went to sea by boat. The farm buildings visible in the distance, however, speak of a scattered settlement, because as far as the eye can see, there are no other houses in sight.
