Ukrainian-born Anatoli Strahhov (b. 1946) has lived and worked in Estonia for over 50 years, participating in countless exhibitions and illustrating several books during this time. His works are lively and fairytale-like, painted with a strong hand but at the same time delicate and clearly planned, existing within the framework of a certain vision. The artist has always had a special love for cats, birds and women.

“Kabuki masks II” perfectly demonstrates Strakhov’s strong vision, stylistic purity and control over his chosen genre. There is no vanity in the work — everything is exactly as it should be. Kabuki, which stretches back to 17th-century Kyoto, is a logical choice of subject knowing Strakhov’s other work. Fairytales, theater, dance, glamorous costumes and those same legendary masks are mixed into one of Japan’s most famous art forms.
