One of the most distinctive painters in Estonian art, Alo Hoidre (1916 -1993), fell in love with painting late in his life, but he maintained a constant dialogue with the classics of modernism throughout his creative path. This figural composition is also a picturesquely effective pastiche of famous female images from art history.

The Mona Lisa in the center of the canvas is surrounded by ladies from paintings by Goya, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others, above whose heads Hoidre has placed cancan dancers – performers of the most erotic variety dance of the 19th century. Of course, this part of the composition amplifies the frivolity and joie de vivre emanating from the piece but it also demonstrates how well Hoidre manages to construct a complete pictorial space from formal components, also providing visual pleasure.
