Alfred Kongo (1906-1990), who graduated from the legendary Pallas class of 1940, became one of Estonia’s most renowned landscape and flower painters. His distinct style took shape in the early 1960s when, after a break imposed by the authorities, he began to actively exhibit again. Kongo was able to combine impressionist expressiveness with Fauvist decorativeness, taking from Pallas a love of classic coloristic values.

The above is most prominently expressed in this painting where picturesque integrity is achieved with few colors: grays, whites, browns, green, but the result is nevertheless positively bright. Kongo romanticizes the archaic beauty of Saaremaa and charmingly convinces the viewer of this, too.
