My good world flows through my eyes
in and out with a sweet buzz,
with a painful buzz, with a fiery buzz,
until my eyes get wet
and my good will be multiplied a hundredfold
in my happy eyes.
Excerpt from Jaan Kross’ poem “Discovering the World”
Aleksander Vardi (1901-1983), from Tartu, until 1940 Bergmann, was one of Estonia’s most prominent and stylistically pure impressionists and one of Pallas’ first students. At school, he immediately stood out as a capable and determined student, and received a scholarship to travel abroad. The artist, who studied under Konrad Mägi and Ado Vabbe, headed for Paris for four years (1925-1929) after finishing school. Vardi also moved to the favorite city of artists of the time later, in 1937, when his acclaimed views of Paris were completed.
Vardi’s landscapes are based on an immediate impression of nature, a free and soft brushstroke, and a rich green palette. This enchanting view of Lake Pühajärv is also one of them. Masterfully set tonal proportions create a convincing spatial effect, where the lush top of the tree in the foreground seems to open its mouth to the Kolga Peninsula that dominates the middle ground.
