The acclaimed watercolorist Aleksander Pilar (1912-1989) loved to paint water. His works often depict sailboats arriving at a harbor, boats bobbing in the sea, or a curved coastline painted with a soft brush. In this painting, the artist has also depicted water – but not in a bay or in sea puddles, but in large puddles after rain, approaching the view of Tallinn’s Old Town in the distance from a new perspective.
As a masterful landscape painter, he conveys to the viewer the flickering of the last falling drops and the refreshing gust of air that has arrived at the same time. But it is the nuanced capture of the light after the rain that makes this soft-hued watercolor truly special, worthy of a master.
