The grand 0ld man of Estonian watercolor painting, the legendary Aleksander Pilar (1912-1989), captured both the capital and the more remote natural beauty of Estonia, designed theater decorations and costumes for Vanemuine and actively participated in the work of the Artists’ Union.
“Sailboats in the evening light” shows both masterful watercolor technique and the nuanced skill of mastering evening light. The glow of the almost-set sun in the foreground blends so seamlessly with the greenish hue of the water surface in the background that it is difficult for the eye to explain where one tone begins and the other ends.
With such a harmonious transition, Pilar creates the impression of a mirror-smooth water surface, conveying a quiet evening in the harbor without the slightest gust of wind. The artist creates a personified portrait of sailboats at rest, lulled to sleep by the evening light, ready to face new adventures tomorrow.
