Aleksander Mildeberg studied at the Tallinn School of Art and Design in 1916-17 and was a schoolmate of Eduard Wiiralt. The Art Museum of Estonia has three different drypoint portraits of Wiiralt (all from 1956) from the Alfred Rõude collection. Since Wiiralt himself had already passed away by this time, it is possible that Rõude gave Mildeberg photographs of the artist to portray his friend.
This drypoint portrait, created in 1958, is a bit more generalized and detailed. Mildeberg was a good portraitist and has depicted several other Estonian cultural figures in various graphic techniques as well.
