A soft and picturesque aquatint work by Aino Bach (1901-1980) symbolizes the era of liberation in Estonian art that began in the mid-1950s, when the female nude once again became a popular subject of representation.

Aino Bach made a name for herself in the 1930s, and as a graphic artist depicting women, her thoughtful, lyrical model pose is particularly captivating. In the nude, which is conveyed only with contour lines, the model’s face and hairstyle receive more detailed modeling, and an aesthetically beautiful contrast that offers the illusion of depth is created by the dark, elaborate, not precisely defined space and the model’s white, unearthly fairy-like body.
