Signature A. Lill 1980 “KOMMUNIKATSIOON“ MATTI MILIUSELE

Ado Lill’s large-format “Communication” is a conceptual artwork that puts everything possible into communication with each other – two contrasting tones, different angles of the painting as well as geometric shapes. Not to mention the communication between the artist himself and the viewer.

It is with the latter that Lill opens a real chest of drawers of topics for conversation and lets the viewer find a specific theme that speaks to them. For example, painter Mauri Gross finds folk costume patterns from the Lake Peipsi region in the painting, saying the following:

“In the piece, through the enlargement of the motif, a direct reference to the folk costumes and belts of Avinurme can be found. The belts themselves are mostly red and white but the skirt on which the belt is looped is red on blue. The author’s play on words, or communication, has been broad and mysterious.”

“Communication” once belonged to the collection of legendary art collector Mati Milius as indicated by the corresponding note on the back of the piece.
