One of our most versatile exiled artists, Pallas graduate Endel Kõks (1912-1983), was able to travel elsewhere in Europe and the USA as early as the 1960s and usually formalized his travel impressions into quite spontaneous travel pictures, which are now considered classics of the genre.
This watercolor piece comes from Spain: an interior view of a cozy tavern with large drinking glasses and chatting customers. Kõks is attracted by both the local specific atmosphere – the mosaic-covered walls and ceiling, for example, and the people’s body language. The composition exudes such a mood that the viewer wants to be one of the bar’s visitors.
