The early drawings of Tõnis Vint (1942-2019) prove his virtuosity in this classic technique. Vint’s experiments and discoveries in the field of abstraction were radical in the artistic context of the time, approaching, for example, Ülo Sooster and Jüri Arrak in their applications.
In “Ripples”, one can read both figurative imagery and pure abstract form, with the early interest in the curvilinear fluidity of Art Nouveau clearly echoing here. Although the work gives the impression of freehand control, nothing in Vint’s work is ever left to chance – the composition is dominated by a completely controlled rationality.
