Among the group of brilliant Estonian female graphic artists who emerged in the second half of the 1960s, Marju Mutsu (1941-1980) holds a special place. Her work is delicate, sensual, suggestive and associative, but can also approach abstraction, as in the etching “Silent Rain”, born from the synthesis of a white paper surface and a fragile graphic line.

We don’t see rain in the work but we sense silence, a mysteriously poetic mood. Whether we recognize someone’s feet, a flying bird, or a group of generalized figures in the work is irrelevant, because the graphic subtlety that prevails in the composition is a quality in itself.
