This elegant bagatelle – a masterful interlude to his other motifs – demonstrates well that Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998) could also paint a simple motif on a larger scale. The chamber-like and intriguingly enchanting “A nude by the fireplace” comes from the artist’s most esteemed creative period, when he began to experiment with a freer style of painting, thereby belonging to the generation of young art innovators of the 1960s.

So instead of an idealized and anatomically correct human body, we see exciting plays on form and color, including generalizing and geometric basic forms, which are given character by vigorous brushstrokes delimited by a dark contour and skillfully combined color shades. With admirable skill, Ohakas manages to create a cozy, intimate atmosphere with angular forms, black contours, and powerful brushstrokes, where the soft fireplace light plays on the model’s body. The lady, thoughtfully looking at the fireplace, undoubtedly knows her worth – her pose exudes self-confidence.

“A nude by the fireplace” was exhibited at the exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Valdur Ohakas’ birth at the Allee Gallery (May-June 2025).
