Juhan Püttsepp (1898-1975), who graduated from Pallas in 1929, was an active social figure who led both the Tartu Art Club and, from 1943, the Pallas Art School, later renamed the Tartu State Art Institute. In the midst of all this, he developed into a unique and exciting landscape painter who continued to paint with passion throughout his life.
Tähtvere parish, where Püttsepp was born, was merged with the city of Tartu in 1923 and became a green garden city that has survived to this day. This richly painted autumn motif depicts a view of Tähtvere Park from Laulupeo Boulevard (formerly also called Tähtvere Road), where Püttsepp himself lived at the time. In the dense canopy of trees, in addition to a nostalgic look, we notice a multitude of shades that blend into each other – a homage to the rich color palette of autumn.
The work comes from the artist’s family collection.
