“Those who do it will succeed, but not everyone does it.”
And not everyone wants to. And that’s fine.
You order tea with lemon from the waitress.
and you feel glad that you exist at all.”
Excerpt from Doris Kareva’s poem “Day. Etude”
The paintings created during Endel Kõks’ (1912-1983) travels are always full of people, noise, and the alluring influence of everyday activities. This view of Paris is also packed with the timeless atmosphere of European city life. It is Sunday and everyone has time to meet, go to a gallery with friends, or enjoy a meal at a restaurant.
The dynamic painting style, which nevertheless remains within definite contours, highlights exciting characters. Although there are many people, the different moods of each model stand out: who leans on a bench with a pipe, forgetting for a moment the hustle and bustle, who has come to show themselves and assess others. The prevailing bustle is supported by bright and warm pink tones, which blend from fuchsia to soft apricot shades, while Kõks adds blue, gray and green to achieve balance.
The painting comes from the art collection of Endel Kõks’ brother Jaan Kõks.
