The late 1980s, which is also one of the most highly regarded creative periods of graphic artist Eve Kask (b. 1958), saw the birth of some of the decade’s most iconic erotic prints. They also well-illustrated the then-popular trends in pop art with color graphics. It was at that time that the national mythology boom began in young Estonian art, and the graphic art of their generation responded to it with a laconic formal language, but with a “nude” figurative language that was provocative in context.

Eve Kask’s “Breath of the Night” brings together the stylized female figure of ancient cultures, the dog as a synonym for a loyal and protective guard, and a character who hisses behind a woman. With her bold imagery and powerful message, Kask plays an important role in the history of Estonian feminist art.
