Eugeni Noormägi (1903-1988) from Narva is an artist who had a very exciting life. Noormägi, who studied art with Ants Laikmaa at Pallas, left Estonia in 1920, acquiring further knowledge of art in New York, Paris and Copenhagen. The artist, who eventually settled in Denmark, developed over the years into a painter with a unique style whose work, among other things, shows the influence of French abstract or semi-abstract painting – both in the use of color and in the language of form.
This particular painting is also characterized by an abstract approach. Through expressive geometry, the artist conveys a natural motif, where landscape elements – river, mountains and valleys – are reduced to simplified forms. The emotion of the moment and the mood of the evening sunset are conveyed by considered color combinations, intersecting diagonals, the play of light and shadow and the emphasized relief of alternating brushstrokes. This is a piece that offers the viewer a constant joy of discovery and pleasure, even when encountering it repeatedly.
