Olav Maran (b. 1933) has spoken of inspiration as an entry of the spirit, something that comes from within you, which in turn has reached you from somewhere higher. For an artist, this can be expressed in a quiet wind gently caressing a summer meadow, in trees with newly leafed leaves, or in a cloudless sky. In bright weather.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he created several landscapes that initially seem simple, but through Maran’s metaphysical touch, they touch the viewer’s soul with their silence – just as Arvo Pärt teaches us to listen with our hearts in music, Maran teaches us to do the same thing in art.
The painting gives the impression as if nature had momentarily stiffened, frozen in place, allowing a gust of wind to shape itself. Yet it does not create tension because the color is carried by the warm sun and the soft, disappearing strokes melt evenly into a harmonious sight. Peace is on earth. And in the viewer’s heart.
