This 1942 painting depicts Tähtvere Park in Tartu. The interesting piece is painted on a clay-brown base and at times, its warmth shines through the entire painting, creating a sense of unity with the earth and the sky – “as in heaven, so on earth,” as the saying goes.

Nigul Espe’s (1907-1970) expressive brushwork allows us to perceive the lushness of nature. The church stands at the center of the painting as a symbol of hope and continuity. The willows bending in the wind by the shape of which Espe can always be recognized unmistakably, seem to be a hint at the flexible nature of man, which the turbulent times of that time demanded.
