The only self-taught master of the neorealist style of expression in Estonian art was Enn Volmere (1908-1978), whose trademark became landscape painting in flaming, strong tones, with thick, textured color schemes, and contour lines that emphasized the components of the motif.

“Autumnal landscape on a lake” is expressive, dynamic, full of emotion and very eye-catching. His canvas unconsciously brings together the German Expressionists of the 1920s, Georges Rouault, Jean Dubuffet and the Estonian Ellinor Aiki, creating a combination that is unique in Volmere’s best works – like this painting.
