Toomas Vint (b. 1944) became a painter in the sphere of influence of ANK’64, a collective for whom pop art was the main guiding principle. “When he is sometimes associated with René Magritte, what comes to mind first is the latter’s technique of painting a light blue daytime sky with white cloud tufts over a night scene with black trees and lantern light. The well-known surrealist has justified the contradiction hidden in this as follows: day and night exist simultaneously in the world, just as the sadness and joy of different people exist at exactly the same time,” writes art critic Vappu Thurlow.
Vint’s lyrical landscapes create peace in the soul and this feeling is even more intense within his seaside landscapes. The artist has an amazing ability to disrupt our worldview – we see that the sun is shining somewhere but what is it shining over? Is there a sea? A forest? The seashore is full of wind-blown reeds but where does the boundary between water and land lie? Where does grass begin and where do sea plants come from? And finally, the most important question: where are we in the picture?
