Marko Mäetamm’s (b. 1965) stories are based on everyday life situations but he almost always manages to present them in such a way that even the most serious viewer who has come to the art gallery will involuntarily turn up the corners of their mouths.

In this work, which belongs to the “Arrogant Nineties”, Mäetamm connects the aesthetics of the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” with the motif of a figure waving until a universal reunion. In the latter, he combines a fully bearded man wearing a hat and a blindfold, known from Marc Chagall’s paintings, presenting the figure as an unearthly winged creature holding a huge lorgnette. Here, Mäetamm demonstrates his characteristic ironic play with images, art history and contemporary life.
