Hugo Lepik (1905-2001) was known before the war as a lecturer at the Estonian State School of Art and a graphic artist. Alongside this, however, he increasingly found himself as a painter, which eventually became his main field in Sweden where the artist moved to in 1944. Incidentally, art historian Kaalu Kirme considered Lepik to be one of Günther Reindorff’s most promising students.

In this piece, Lepik tells of a time when the quiet season has arrived in the port, which is so noisy and busy in the summer. The sailor looking thoughtfully towards the ship adds a dreamy, nostalgic feel to the work and leads thoughts to the unwavering relationship between man and the sea – we cannot live without each other!

The emotion is amplified by the pinkish afternoon sky, which is in harmonious balance with the rust-colored hull of the ship. In terms of painting technique, Lepik has cleverly used the rough surface of the underlying canvas, thereby emphasizing the manly and solid nature of the port.
