Emma Siirak Uusen (1910-2006), who graduated from the Art and Industrial School of Tallinn in 1937, was one of those who, along with thousands of her compatriots, fled Estonia in 1944 and, after Austria and Germany, emigrated to the USA. There, she became one of the most prolific Estonian artists who also participated in Estonian exhibitions in Germany, Canada and Australia.
The intimate painting “Sunset on the lake” is a masterful composition in terms of color where emotional lavender, turquoise reflecting the evening sky, and passionate sunny orange flirt with each other. The painting demonstrates the artist’s excellent mastery of pastel technique and talent for composing an evening landscape with a lyrical mood.
The body language of the person sitting in the boat exudes peace and relaxation, which goes so well with the view of nature bathed in the sunset. The artist has placed other fishermen in the background, too – each with their own specific place and favorite spot on this lake.
