Richard Uutmaa’s (1905-1977) favorite subjects for autumnal landscapes were birch trees, which helped to both rhythmize the composition and balance the lush colors of the season. In the 1970s, they were mostly based on his impressions of his hometown of Eisma, as it was during this time that he increasingly stayed in his studio due to health problems or sought inspiration primarily from nearby forests.
In “Autumn landscape” from 1971, Uutmaa fully enjoys the free flow that comes from the fluidity of watercolor. By dipping the brush, sometimes more strongly, sometimes more gently, into the green, yellow and red on the palette, a completely new autumn magic is born in the painting, caused by the free dispersion of color. He uses the same technique for the houses visible from the trees but uses a slightly more specific line in the foreground to convey the shadows. The result is a true fairyland.
