“I listen for hours and hours to the sea’s single sentence,
thinking about how it is written.”

Doris Kareva “I listen for hours and hours”

Richard Sagrits (1910-1968), a Pallas graduate born in Karepa, is a great representative of the realistic school of painting. The coastal landscape depicting a summer day with strong waves and dark billows of clouds continues the long tradition of this genre in Estonian art with dignity.

Sagrits pays equal attention to both the sea and the beach in his painting but a special mood is created by the group of clouds painted on the high horizon – it has a coloristic density, a sense of atmosphere and a sense of spaciousness as well. A boulder in brown tones in the middle of the sea seems typical of Estonian nature, at the same time a unique sign of only this place here and now.
