Tenno Pent Sooster (b. 1957) is linked in art with his father Ülo Sooster by their love of surrealism but the younger Sooster’s surrealism is figuratively something else – interpreting a specific place and structure. The gigantic insects and butterflies covering a building fragment resembling a suburb of Rome with its metaphysical architecture of the late 1930s are not from this world – in Sooster’s work they seem instead like characters from an exciting storybook.

Thus, the architectural motif familiar from and inspired by the paintings of the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico meets the characters of contemporary pop culture in Sooster’s work, illustrating the unreal dreamscape evoked in our subconscious as it should be. In February-March 2025, Tenno Pent Sooster’s works were exhibited at an exhibition held at the Beseder Gallery in Prague (together with Sergej Bunkov), and in 2026, the artist’s solo exhibition will open at the Tartu Art Museum.
