The work of film costume designers is often overshadowed by other filmmakers, yet it is the costumes that are remembered by the viewer, in addition to the actors themselves, especially in historical films such as “The Last Relic”.
Helve Halla, born in 1939, can be called an undiscovered genius or one of the most important costume designers in Estonian film history. Her professional career began as a costume designer for the legendary “The Last Relic” in 1969 and continued on an upward trajectory for over 20 years, including the creation of costumes for “The Master of Kõrboja”, “Toomas Nipernaadi”, and many others.
Coming to auction for the first time, the original costume design for one of the key characters in “The Last Relic,” Brother Johannes, based on Halla’s designs, is a treat for every film fan and represents the elegant, silhouette-emphasizing drawing style of 1960s costume designers par excellence.
